Graphit-Besucherbergwerk Kropfmühl, Graphite show mine and museum in Hauzenberg, Germany.
Graphit-Besucherbergwerk Kropfmühl is a former graphite extraction site in Hauzenberg where visitors descend underground to see historical equipment and mineral formations. The tunnels reach depths of 45 meters and display conditions as they existed during active mining.
Graphite mining in Kropfmühl started in 1870 and led to the creation of the Graphitwerk Kropfmühl company in 1916. The facilities visitors see today come from this industrial era.
Former miners lead visitors through the tunnels and share their own experiences working underground. Hearing directly from them gives a real sense of what the job was like and how people once extracted the mineral.
The site is open from March to October with guided tours available daily. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground underground is uneven and temperatures stay cool below the surface.
Since 2016, the Graphiteum offers interactive displays about graphite mining technology and how minerals form. This modern addition to the historic mine helps visitors understand the mineral's origins and industrial uses.
