Kommende Süpplingenburg, Medieval commandry in Süpplingenburg, Germany.
Kommende Süpplingenburg is a medieval commandry featuring a church located on an island formed by the Schunter River between Königslutter and Helmstedt. The layout shows how the site once combined defensive structures with a religious center within the surrounding landscape.
The site began around 1130 as a foundation and passed to the Knights Templar in 1173, who made it one of their major centers. When the Templars were dissolved, the Knights Hospitaller took control and maintained the complex thereafter.
St. John Church carries the name of the original chapel and displays features of Romanesque architecture typical of that era. Visitors can trace the building and artistic heritage of an important religious site through its physical remains.
The commandry can be reached via Bundesstraße 1 federal highway or the Rennau junction of Bundesautobahn 2 motorway. The terrain is flat and shaped by the river, making it easy to walk around and explore on foot.
Archaeological digs in 1964 uncovered underground remains that revealed the original fortress had a square layout and substantial size. These discoveries show the site was far more elaborate than what visitors see standing today.
