Romeo und Julia, Residential high-rise complex in Stuttgart, Germany
Romeo und Julia is a residential complex featuring two distinctive towers with contrasting designs: Romeo rises 65 meters with 19 floors, while Julia displays a horseshoe-shaped profile. The ensemble houses apartments in various sizes, ground-floor shops, and studio apartments with terraces on the upper levels.
The complex was built between 1955 and 1959 in response to Stuttgart's need for modern housing after World War II. Architects Hans Scharoun and Wilhelm Frank established a new residential building type in Germany through their innovative design.
The tower names reference the famous lovers and their contrasting shapes echo that romantic story. Visitors immediately notice the colorful facades in ochre, green, red, blue, and violet that set the building apart from standard residential complexes.
The complex is located in central Stuttgart and easily accessible from street level, with the ground-floor zone open for visitors to explore. The colorful facade and contrasting tower shapes make it simple to spot from other parts of the city.
Architect Hans Scharoun lived in one of Romeo's four rooftop studio apartments and enjoyed views across the entire city from his home. This personal use of his own design demonstrates his deep belief in the building he created.
