Flugplatz Ulm-Dornstadt, Airfield near Ulm, Germany
Flugplatz Ulm-Dornstadt is an airfield situated north of Ulm between the former Reichsstrasse 10 and the railway line to Stuttgart. The grounds retain four original buildings from the wartime period, including a former control tower now designated as Building 6.
The site was established in 1917 by the War Ministry of the Kingdom of Württemberg as an airfield, but flight operations ended in 1919. It later served different purposes before becoming a reception center in the postwar years.
After 1950, the facility became a social center providing shelter for people arriving from Eastern Europe. The site served as part of a larger network of reception points helping newcomers start their lives.
The grounds are relatively easy to explore, with buildings spread across an accessible area. Visitors should be aware this is a historical site where not all areas may be freely accessible.
From 1946 to 1947, the site housed 503 Jewish orphans administered by the United States military forces. This period represented an important chapter in postwar relief efforts and family rebuilding.
