Energon, Passive house office building in Ulm, Germany.
Energon is an office building with a triangular form that spans five levels and features a glass-covered atrium connecting all floors through stairs and walkways. The complex provides nearly 7000 square meters of office space with approximately 420 workstations, mainly occupied by information technology and software development firms.
The building was completed in October 2002 and was one of the first office buildings in Germany constructed according to passive house standards. This innovation marked a turning point in sustainable construction and inspired later projects across the country.
The building embodies Germany's commitment to environmental construction through energy-saving technologies and sustainable design principles. Visitors notice this philosophy reflected in the thoughtful structure and modern systems that shape daily work life.
The building is accessible during daytime hours and features an open interior courtyard with stairs and walkways that are easy to explore. Visitors should note that access to most office areas requires prior arrangement, as it remains a private workplace.
Beneath the structure lie forty geothermal probes extending up to 100 meters underground, working together with concrete core temperature control systems. This underground network keeps the building at optimal temperature year-round without relying on external heating or cooling systems.
