Elbschlosskeller, 24-hour bar in St. Pauli district, Hamburg, Germany.
Elbschlosskeller is a continuously open bar at Hamburger Berg 38 in the St. Pauli district, near Reeperbahn. The room appears dark with red-brown walls, curtains, and a small dance floor in the corner.
The bar opened in 1952 and took its name from a former brewery in the Nienstedten district. The interior remained largely unchanged and still reflects the post-war atmosphere today.
The name comes from the former Elbschloss brewery in Hamburg-Nienstedten and points to the tradition of harbor pubs. Guests often smoke together and exchange stories while a small stage sits behind the red curtains.
The bar opens around the clock and serves only drinks with no food menu. The entrance sits just a few minutes' walk from Reeperbahn and is easy to reach for night owls.
In 2020, the place turned into a soup kitchen and distributed clothing to homeless people. This initiative showed the social role of the bar within the district beyond its usual operation.
