Küstenbereiche Flensburger Förde von Flensburg bis Geltinger Birk, Conservation area at Flensburg Fjord, Germany
The coastal conservation area stretches from Flensburg to Geltinger Birk and includes dunes, sandy beaches, salt meadows, and brackish lagoons along the Baltic Sea. Different habitat types can be explored through well-developed paths that crisscross the region.
The region gained its conservation status in 1934 to preserve its special habitats permanently. The Geltinger Birk section had already been reshaped in 1821 through dyke construction and windmills, which continue to mark the landscape.
The name reflects its position along the fjord, where salt meadows and lagoons have shaped human use for generations. Today marked hiking trails allow visitors to access these spaces, with routes named after local wildlife species.
Visitors can access the region through parking areas at Charlotte Mill and Falshöft Lighthouse, with main entry points near the town of Gelting. The trails are clearly marked and suitable for different fitness levels.
The area is home to a herd of Konik horses, originally introduced for natural landscape maintenance. These hardy animals help control vegetation and shape the landscape in a naturalistic way.
