Kührointalm, Mountain pasture in Schönau am Königsee, Germany
Kührointalm is a mountain pasture lodge in Berchtesgaden National Park, positioned between the Kleiner Watzmann and the Königssee. The site consists of wooden farm buildings surrounded by open meadows, with a clear view down toward the lake and across the nearby ridges.
The use of these high meadows as summer pasture goes back to medieval times, when farmers from the valley began bringing livestock up to graze during the warmer months. The pattern of paths, huts, and cleared land visible today took shape through that long practice.
The pasture sits inside a national park, so visitors are expected to stay on marked paths and respect the grazing animals they encounter along the way. Freshly made dairy products are often available directly at the lodge, giving a taste of what the herders produce each summer season.
The path up to the lodge runs along a mountain trail that calls for sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness. The lodge is only open and staffed during the summer season, so visiting outside that window means finding nothing there.
From the lodge, on a clear day, you can see both the Königssee and the upper peaks of the Watzmann at the same time, a combination that few spots in the area offer. This double view makes the position of the lodge one of the more unusual in the whole park.
