Heine-Haus, Jungfernstieg, Heritage monument in Neustadt district, Hamburg, Germany.
Heine-Haus on Jungfernstieg is a late-classical building that French architect Joseph Ramée designed in 1832. The oval-shaped structure displays features typical of that architectural period and functions as a garden house overlooking the waterfront.
Banker Salomon Heine commissioned this garden house, which later became known through its connection to his nephew, poet Heinrich Heine. The building received protected status in 1962 and underwent major renovation in 1979.
The space bears the Heine family name and serves today as a venue for literary gatherings and cultural programs. Visitors encounter regular readings and events that connect to the literary heritage associated with the building.
Entry to the house is by advance arrangement, so plan your visit ahead. Online recordings and information about current programs help you understand what to expect before you go.
The garden contains sculptural installations by artist Cony Theis honoring both Salomon Heine and his nephew. These outdoor artworks weave together the private family story with the building's later importance in literary history.
