Brahetrolleborg, Medieval castle in Faaborg-Midtfyn Municipality, Denmark.

Brahetrolleborg is a castle with four wings that incorporates a former Cistercian abbey church as its northern section near Faaborg town. The structure combines monastic architecture with later residential additions into a unified whole.

The site was founded as Holme Abbey in 1172 and underwent major transformations, first becoming Rantzausholm in 1568 and later developing under the Brahe Trolle family. These shifts in identity reflected changing political and social conditions in Denmark.

The castle chapel holds a remarkable crucifix by sculptor Claus Berg from 1500, reflecting medieval Danish religious devotion. This artwork demonstrates the craftsmanship that flourished in sacred spaces.

The castle stands about 10 kilometers northwest of Faaborg and is reached via Grønderupvej road. Its position at roughly 40 meters elevation offers good views over the surrounding South Funen landscape.

The west wing preserves original monastic features including vaulted cellars and an inscription documenting the handover to Heinrich Rantzau. These surviving spaces allow visitors to see the physical traces of the monastic past.
