Ymerbrønden, Contemporary fountain sculpture in Torvet, Faaborg, Denmark.
Ymerbrønden is a fountain on Torvet, the main square of Faaborg, a small town on the Danish island of Funen. It is made of bronze and granite and features running water that flows through the sculptural form.
The fountain was designed by Danish artist Christian Lemmerz and unveiled in 2005. It was part of an effort to bring new public art into the center of Faaborg.
Ymer is a figure from Norse mythology, the first giant, whose body was used to form the world. This reference gives an ordinary town square a layer of meaning that most passersby absorb without looking for it.
The fountain stands directly on Torvet, the central square of Faaborg, surrounded by cafes and small shops. It is easy to reach on foot and sits at the heart of the old town center.
Christian Lemmerz is known mainly as a concept artist whose work often deals with decay and death. This fountain stands in sharp contrast to the rest of his work, feeling almost unexpectedly open and approachable for a public space.
