Fur Formation

The Fur Formation extends across northern Denmark with exposed cliffs containing layers of diatomaceous earth, clay minerals, and volcanic ash deposits.

Dating back approximately 55 million years to the Early Eocene period, this formation developed during a time when temperatures exceeded current levels by 4-8 degrees.

Scientists and researchers from various institutions study the formation's extensive collection of fossils at museums in Mors Island, Fur Island, and Copenhagen.

The formation spans 60 meters in thickness and contains 180 distinct layers, providing researchers with detailed geological records of the Paleocene-Eocene boundary.

The sedimentary layers preserve over 200 species of insects, 130 species of diatoms, and numerous early bird specimens from the Eocene period.
