Harrestrup Å, Small river in Copenhagen, Denmark
Harrestrup Å is a river flowing through the western suburbs of Copenhagen for about 20 kilometers from a woodland area to the coast. Walking paths follow much of its course, though some sections are blocked by buildings and private land.
For centuries the river shaped the local landscape, but experienced major changes after World War II. A 1947 urban planning scheme brought new housing and development to its banks, fundamentally reshaping the area.
The river passes through multiple community parks where residents spend time outdoors and enjoy green spaces throughout the seasons. These areas form part of daily life for people living in the surrounding suburbs.
The best time to explore is during dry weather when paths are easily accessible and water levels are low. Wearing comfortable shoes is important since the ground varies by season and some sections can be muddy or marshy.
A major restoration project in the early 2010s focused on bringing back the natural environment of this urban river. Multiple municipalities and utility companies joined forces to improve the ecological health of the waterway and surrounding habitats.
