Roskilde Museum, Cultural history and archaeological museum in Roskilde, Denmark.
Roskilde Museum is a cultural history and archaeological museum housed in two historic buildings: Sukkerhuset, a former sugar production facility from 1761, and Liebes Gård, a merchant's house from around 1800. The collections include finds from prehistory and the Middle Ages as well as later objects from the region's everyday life.
The museum was founded in 1929 and documents the region's history from prehistoric times to today. Many objects come from archaeological excavations in Roskilde and show important phases of human settlement.
The exhibitions show how people in this region lived across centuries, from everyday objects to valuable finds. You can see the role that trade and craftsmanship played for the city.
The venue is easily accessible on foot from central Roskilde and the two buildings are located close to each other. It helps to allow about two hours to explore both buildings and the collections.
Sukkerhuset, the former sugar production building, served as the city fire station from 1925 to 1984 before becoming part of the museum. This unexpected secondary history shows how old buildings in Roskilde had multiple lives before finding their current purpose.
