Bjerre Herred, Medieval hundred division in Vejle County, Denmark
Bjerre Herred is a medieval hundred division in Vejle County extending between Horsens and Vejle Fjords, forming a peninsula with three promontories: Hundshage, As Hoved, and Bjørnsknude. The area lies today mostly within Hedensted Municipality, except for Uth Parish which belongs to Horsens Municipality.
The hundred developed during medieval times and functioned as an administrative and judicial unit for centuries until dissolving in 1970. Local assemblies called tingsted gathered at designated sites to settle disputes and handle community matters.
The region contains fifteen parishes including the island of Hjarnø, with Stouby Church serving as a spiritual center displaying Gothic architecture and Renaissance artworks. These places show how the church anchored community life across the scattered settlements.
The area is particularly useful for genealogical research because of its clear historical administrative boundaries and documentation in local records. Visitors should note that the boundaries do not always match modern municipal borders today.
The highest points in the region are Purrehøj at 121 meters (397 feet) and Troldemose Bakke at 120 meters (394 feet), standing out distinctly in the flat Danish landscape. These elevations served as important landmarks for travelers crossing the peninsula.
