Hammermøllen, Watermill in Hellebæk, Denmark
Hammermøllen is a watermill in Hellebæk that powered a firearms manufacturing facility using two water wheels. The mill building still displays the machinery that drove the forge bellows and the hammers used to shape gun barrels.
The mill was built in 1765 to power the Kronborg weapons factory and became central to the region's early industrialization. The facility was restructured in 1873, marking the end of local firearms production.
The site shows how craft and industry were connected in the past: today it displays a model of the settlement from the 1820s alongside exhibits of blacksmithing and weapons production. Visitors get a sense of how people worked and what they made during this period.
Visitors can join guided tours to learn about the mill machinery and production processes. It is worth checking in advance whether tours are being offered, as self-guided visits may be limited.
By the late 1700s, the water and dam system had grown to include 27 separate pools that supported the entire industrial site. This elaborate water management system shows how complex the infrastructure needed to be for such production facilities.
