Udrejsecenter Avnstrup, Departure center in Hvalsø, Denmark
Udrejsecenter Avnstrup is a reception center for rejected asylum seekers located in a forested area within Lejre Municipality, housed in a converted building complex. The facility accommodates around 400 people and provides shared and private accommodation options along with communal facilities.
The site opened in 1940 as Avnstrup Sanatorium, serving tuberculosis patients for several decades before the hospital closed. Following this closure in 1992, the grounds were repurposed as a reception center for asylum seekers.
The Danish Red Cross manages daily operations, providing educational programs, daycare facilities, and structured activities for both children and adult residents.
Families of four or more are given two rooms with private bathrooms, while smaller households share rooms and facilities with other residents. Childcare and structured activities are available on site to support daily life.
Children between ages 6 and 16 attend either the Red Cross school in Lynge or local schools, receiving additional native language instruction.
