Rolighed, Baroque monument in Frederiksberg, Denmark
Description
Rolighed is a baroque mansion in Frederiksberg featuring a distinctive dark-tiled Mansard roof on its main residence. The property is surrounded by yellow farm buildings arranged in a quadrangle around a central courtyard, preserving the original layout of a working estate.
History
It started in 1742 as a wax bleaching facility supplying materials to the Danish Royal Court. In 1770 it was converted into a summer residence, then acquired in 1855 by the Ministry of Interior Affairs to house the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University from 1858 onward.
Culture
The name Rolighed translates to tranquility and ease, reflecting its original purpose as a country retreat. Today the yellow farm buildings arranged around the courtyard tell the story of its past as a working estate with significant agricultural operations.
Practical
The property is located in Frederiksberg and is accessible by public transport. The University of Copenhagen currently manages the site, so it's worth checking in advance whether access to the grounds and buildings is permitted.
Did you know?
The estate takes its name literally from the quality visitors should experience there. The quiet courtyards and older living spaces still convey the sense of refuge from city life that the original owner sought.
