Schieß- und Übungsplatz Oksbøl, Military training facility in Varde Municipality, Denmark
The Oksbøl training ground is a 6,500 hectare military facility with heathland, dunes, and marshes between Blåvand and Vejers in southwestern Jutland. The area includes designated zones for tank operations, aircraft exercises, and artillery practice.
The facility was established in 1929 and expanded significantly during World War II when the Danish state acquired large portions of Kallesmærsk Heath. Between 1967 and 1969, one of Denmark's largest land acquisitions displaced hundreds of properties for military use.
Brikby is a purpose-built mock village on the grounds constructed in 1995 for urban combat training. The site shows how military units prepare for operations in populated areas through realistic tactical scenarios.
Access is restricted during active training periods due to ongoing military exercises. Visitors should check in advance which areas are open and when training activities are not in progress.
Abandoned houses and farmsteads dot the grounds, left behind by people displaced during the land acquisitions of the 1960s. These quiet remains tell the story of a significant moment in Danish history when you see the empty foundations and crumbling structures.
