Zisterzienserinnenabtei Sostrup, Cistercian monastery in Norddjurs Municipality, Denmark
Zisterzienserinnenabtei Sostrup is a monastery complex comprising a renovated castle and modern buildings constructed in the 1990s to accommodate the religious community. The site combines historic architecture with contemporary structures designed for monastic living.
Founded in 1920 by five nuns from a Czech monastery, the community relocated to Sostrup Castle in 1961 and established itself there as a center for Cistercian life. This move marked a significant turning point in the community's development and spiritual mission.
The monastery brought together sisters from multiple countries who lived according to Cistercian principles and shared daily rhythms of prayer and community life. This international composition shaped the character of the religious community that occupied the site.
The site ceased regular operations in 2013 and the buildings now serve different purposes, making casual visits limited without prior arrangement. Contact in advance to understand what access may be available and how the space is currently used.
The chapel was created within the former horse stables of the castle, transforming an agricultural space into a place of worship. This creative reuse shows how the community adapted historic spaces to serve their spiritual needs.
