Algiers Houari Boumediene Airport, International airport in Dar El Beïda district, Algiers, Algeria
Algiers Houari Boumediene Airport sits in the Dar El Beïda district and serves as the main aviation gateway of Algeria for international and domestic connections. The complex includes three separate terminals and two parallel runways each measuring 3500 meters in length at an elevation of 25 meters above sea level.
The facility was founded in 1924 as Maison Blanche Airport and grew into a civilian operation with international connections. During World War II, the site served as a strategic base for American and British forces in the Mediterranean theater.
The facility bears the name of Houari Boumediene, a former president who governed the country from 1965 to 1978. For many Algerians, this naming marks the connection between the airport and the post-independence era.
Terminal 1 handles international flights through 14 air bridges, while Terminal 2 covers domestic routes and Terminal 3 manages charter operations. A suburban rail link established in 2019 connects the airport directly to central Algiers through regular train services.
The parallel runways allow simultaneous flight movements, which greatly increases capacity during peak times. The location at just 25 meters above sea level and proximity to the coast often influence flight patterns and approach procedures during strong Mediterranean winds.
