El Oued Province

El Oued Province spreads across 54,573 square kilometers of the Sahara Desert, featuring vast sand dunes, salt lakes, and scattered oases throughout its territory.

The administrative region was established in 1984 through a territorial reorganization that separated it from Biskra Province, creating an independent governmental structure.

The population of 673,934 inhabitants maintains traditional agricultural methods, cultivating date palms in funnel-shaped craters that protect the trees from desert winds.

The province contains ten administrative districts and twenty-two municipalities, with the city of El Oued functioning as the capital and primary economic center.

The Grand Erg Oriental occupies the southern half of the province, presenting an expanse of uninterrupted sand dunes that shape the regional landscape.
