Chebika is an oasis in western Tunisia where water springs emerge from rocky cliffs and flow through a series of pools. The cascading water nourishes dense groves of date palms spread across the valley floor.
The site was a Roman military outpost called Ad Speculum from the 1st century BC to the 7th century AD. Soldiers stationed here guarded the route connecting two major provincial towns.
Local farmers work using traditional methods that families have practiced for generations in this desert setting. You can see old irrigation systems on the terraces that distribute the precious water.
The hike to the waterfall takes about 40 minutes and climbs over rocky terrain. Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water for the walk.
The original village was completely destroyed by flooding in 1969 and had to be rebuilt. The new settlement was constructed with a geometric street layout that still stands today.
