Tozeur

Tozeur is a governorate in southwestern Tunisia covering vast desert land with traditional mud brick settlements scattered across the landscape. The region contains various desert formations and oasis villages where people have built their communities in this arid environment.

This region developed as an agricultural center and became an important administrative division after Tunisia's independence in the 1950s. Since then it has served as a gateway to the Sahara and the country's southern regions.

Houses here are built with clay bricks arranged in geometric patterns, following construction methods that have been passed down for hundreds of years in this sandy region. The way locals design their homes still reflects these ancient building practices and shows how communities adapted to desert life.

The best time to visit is between October and April when temperatures are milder and travel conditions are more comfortable. Roads connect the region to larger cities like Gafsa and Sfax, offering several ways to reach it.

The Chott el Jerid salt lake within the region creates an optical illusion under certain conditions where water and sky seem to merge together. This natural phenomenon captivates visitors who cross the white expanse.
