El Hamdania Port, Deep-water port project in Cherchell, Algeria
El Hamdania Port is a deep-water port on the Algerian coast near Cherchell, built to handle large cargo ships. It has several quays designed to receive different types of goods arriving by sea.
Construction began in 2015, marking Algeria's first major new port project in several decades. The aim was to give the country a modern facility capable of handling a much larger volume of sea trade.
The port sits near the ancient city of Caesarea, once one of the most important Roman cities in North Africa. Visitors passing through the area can still find traces of that long history in the surrounding town of Cherchell.
The port is primarily a working facility, so public access is limited and visitors should not expect to walk freely through the site. The nearby town of Cherchell offers views of the coastline for those curious about the area.
The project was carried out through a partnership between Algerian and Chinese companies, which was uncommon for an infrastructure project of this scale in the region. The Chinese involvement followed a pattern of similar partnerships along several African coastlines during that period.
