Rakvere Castle, Medieval castle in Rakvere, Estonia
Rakvere Castle is a stone fortress built on a limestone hill with thick defensive walls and towers surrounding a large interior courtyard. The structure contains multiple rooms and chambers spread across several levels that served different purposes throughout its history.
Danish rulers started building this stone fortress in 1220 on a strategically important height. The Livonian Order acquired and expanded the structure later to strengthen its defenses.
The castle demonstrates how people lived in medieval times through craftspeople performing their trades and preparing traditional meals. Visitors watch artisans at work with period techniques and experience the sights and sounds of daily life from that era.
Visitors can climb the towers, explore the dungeons, and join guided tours to learn more about medieval use. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes as the paths are uneven and there are many stairs to navigate.
Inside the walls is a workshop where visitors can watch medieval alchemical methods and early medical procedures being demonstrated. These reenactments show what techniques and substances people used for healing and health care in that time period.
