Kärkna Abbey, Cistercian monastery in Lammiku, Estonia.

Kärkna Abbey is a rectangular stone monastery built near the confluence of the Amme River and Emajõgi River, located north of Tartu. Today visitors can see the remaining stone foundations and granite wall sections that trace the outline of this fortified religious structure.

Bishop Hermann von Buxhoeveden of Dorpat founded the monastery before 1233, bringing monks from Pforta Abbey to establish the community. These settlers introduced their monastic traditions and architectural practices that shaped religious life at this location.

The monastery represents early Christian religious life in Estonia, with its church serving as the spiritual center where monks gathered for prayer and community rituals.

The site is accessible on foot, though the ground is often uneven and may be damp, so sturdy shoes are helpful. The ruins are easiest to examine during drier months when vegetation does not obscure the stonework.

A multi-chambered crypt lay beneath the church with space for burials and emergency shelter during conflicts. This underground structure reveals how monks combined practical storage and spiritual care for their deceased members.
