Karjamaa, Residential subdistrict in Põhja-Tallinn, Estonia
Karjamaa is a residential subdistrict in northern Tallinn situated between major streets and encompassing the Hundipea area along with the Mine Harbor by the bay coast. The area spreads along the northern shoreline with a mix of modern residential buildings, schools, kindergartens, and traces of former factories.
The area was grazing land until the 19th century, when the Baltic Cotton Factory's establishment sparked industrial growth. The harbor and Arsenal factory later became significant production centers for the local economy.
The neighborhood shows a mix of residential buildings and industrial remnants that tell of its dual past. Locals make use of the bay's proximity and green spaces in their daily lives, giving the area its mixed character.
The subdistrict connects easily to central Tallinn through public transportation and has all necessary daily facilities spread within walking distance. Residents and visitors find schools, kindergartens, and shops conveniently located throughout the area.
The Arsenal factory gained recognition before World War I for manufacturing machine guns and military weapons. This industrial past remains visible in the preserved structures that shape the neighborhood's character today.
