Väike-Õismäe, Circular residential district in Haabersti, Estonia
Väike-Õismäe is a residential district in Haabersti built with apartment buildings arranged in concentric rings around an artificial lake. The structures vary from single-story to 16-story buildings, creating a distinctive circular pattern when viewed from above.
Architects designed this residential area in 1968 following Soviet urban planning ideas, with construction completed between 1971 and 1975. The circular design reflected a modern approach to building functioning neighborhoods in an expanding city.
The name comes from Estonian words meaning 'small blossom' and reflects a neighborhood built as a self-contained community. Schools, shops, and green spaces sit close together so residents can walk to daily needs.
The district is served by multiple bus and trolleybus lines, making it easy to reach the city center and other neighborhoods. Four schools, shops, and green areas are spread throughout the territory and easy to access on foot.
The circular layout was carefully designed so that apartments in all buildings receive natural sunlight during the day. This thoughtful planning means no building permanently shadows another, giving each residence equal access to daylight.
