Koeru Church

Saint Mary Magdalene Church is a medieval building with a baroque spire and architectural features from different periods layered into its structure. Inside, narrow aisles run between cylindrical pillars topped with decorated capitals, while the walls display painted murals and a 17th century altar painting.

This building rose in the 13th century and saw architectural additions including vaults and a porch constructed during the 14th century. War damage required repairs afterward, work that kept the structure standing through subsequent centuries.

The church cemetery holds graves of important Estonian families whose names appear throughout the region's history. These burial sites show how deeply the church has been woven into local family life and traditions.

The church is located in Koeru village and operates with limited visiting hours, particularly during the warmer months. Before planning a visit, check current opening times since schedules can vary seasonally.

A large wooden crucifix carved by Christian Ackermann hangs inside the church, serving as a focal point for the interior space. This piece reflects the skill of local craftspeople from an earlier era.
