Pilistvere Church

Pilistvere Church is a stone building with a tall square choir, a western tower, and a two-aisled nave structure located in Põhja-Sakala Rural Municipality. The bell tower rises prominently above the surrounding landscape and shapes the character of the area.

Construction began in the late 13th century, making it one of the oldest stone buildings in the region. Despite suffering damage from fires and wartime events, the building has maintained its role as a central religious structure in Estonia.

The church serves as a gathering place for religious ceremonies and features a baroque pulpit from 1686 that reflects how worshippers in this region have conducted their faith practices. The interior preserves liturgical traditions that have endured across generations.

The church stands about 11 kilometers east of Võhma near the Navesti River and is easy to locate when exploring the region. The prominent tower silhouette provides good orientation from a distance, helping visitors find their way.

The tower of this church reaches about 70 meters high, making it the tallest among all rural churches in Estonia and visible from far across the flat landscape. This exceptional height was designed to serve as a landmark for travelers moving through the region.
