Friendship bridge, International bridge between Narva, Estonia and Ivangorod, Russia
The Friendship Bridge is an international road crossing that spans about 162 meters across the Narva River with paths for pedestrians and traffic lanes. The structure uses concrete and steel to support daily movement of cars, buses, and people crossing between the two countries.
The bridge was completed in 1960 and has connected the two countries continuously since then. It was built during a time of major political shifts and remains an important crossing for movement between Estonia and Russia.
The crossing brings together Estonian and Russian neighborhoods that look and feel quite different from each other. It serves as a place where locals visit family, conduct business, and experience how daily life varies on each side of the river.
Pedestrians and vehicles need valid documents and must pass border checks when crossing, which can slow the journey. Expect longer wait times, especially during peak hours or on weekends.
From the bridge, visitors can see two medieval fortresses facing each other across the water: Narva Castle on the Estonian side and Ivangorod Fortress on the Russian side. These ancient structures stand as reminders of the region's long past.
