St. John's Church, Viljandi, Lutheran church in Viljandi, Estonia.
St. John's Church in Viljandi is a Gothic structure with a rectangular nave, narrower chancel on the eastern end, and a tower set into the western wall. The building combines medieval proportions with modern interior features.
The building was constructed between 1466 and 1472 as part of a Franciscan monastery and suffered destruction in 1560 during the Livonian War. After reconstruction, it continued as a religious center before changing roles in the 20th century.
The church displays stained glass windows by Renee Aua and wall tapestries created by Estonian textile artist Professor Anu Raud. These artworks shape the interior and reflect artistic engagement with religious spaces.
The church sits centrally in Viljandi on Pikk street and is easily walkable from the town center. Visitors should check opening times beforehand since these may vary, especially when concerts or events are scheduled.
The building served as a warehouse after 1950 until a major 1992 renovation transformed it into a concert venue. Today musical performances regularly echo through this once purely functional space.
