Small Building of the Vanemuine Theatre, Art Nouveau theatre in Kesklinn, Estonia
The Small Building of the Vanemuine Theatre is a theatre structure with Art Nouveau features in central Tartu that offers a main hall with balconies, boxes, and three tall narrow windows decorated with ornate cornices. The interior was designed so that every seat provides a clear view of the stage.
The building was constructed between 1914 and 1918, replacing a former summer theatre of the German Society of Artisans that was destroyed by fire. The architect combined Neo-Biedermeier influences with elements of Heimatkunst style.
The theatre serves as a gathering place where residents and visitors come together to experience performances and connect through shared artistic moments. The building reflects the cultural values of Tartu through its thoughtful architectural design.
The theatre is located at Vanemuise 45a in Tartu's central district and accommodates approximately 550 visitors in its main hall. You can secure a seat by making reservations through phone or email in advance.
The auditorium was deliberately designed so that both sound and sightlines work equally well from any seat in the room. This careful planning ensures that every viewer experiences performances with the same level of satisfaction regardless of where they sit.
