Building of Tartu University Library, building in Tartu, Estonia
The building of Tartu University Library is an architectural monument in the city center that serves the university's academic and research needs. It spans three main floors with study spaces, reading rooms, and underground storage, housing approximately 3.7 million books and materials in its collections.
The library's origins trace back to 1632 with the founding of Academia Dorpatensis, though the current library opened in 1802 and has grown significantly over time. The present building dates to the early 1980s and underwent major renovation between 2016 and 2018.
The library has served as a center for scholarly exchange and intellectual life in Tartu since its founding. Today it hosts exhibitions, lectures, and cultural events that connect students, researchers, and visitors from the wider community.
The building is easily accessible in the city center and welcomes visitors who can enter without advance registration on a first-come, first-served basis. Guided tours lasting around 45 to 60 minutes are available, allowing visitors to explore the different areas and artistic elements of the space.
The building's roof features approximately 500 glass domes that flood the interior with natural light and give the structure a distinctive visual presence. Inside, artistic works such as a large tapestry by Mall Tomberg and a glass chandelier called "Incunabula" enhance the visitor experience.
