Father and Son, Skulptur von Ülo Õun

Father and Son is a bronze sculpture by Estonian artist Ülo Õun depicting two human figures sharing a quiet moment together. The work was originally created in 1977 as plaster and later cast in bronze in 1987.

The sculpture was created in 1977 as plaster and cast in bronze in 1987 after the artist decided to preserve his work permanently. In 2001, the City of Tartu acquired the piece and placed it in a public location where it now facilitates daily encounters between passersby and art.

The name refers to the immediate family relationship between father and son, which artist Ülo Õun deliberately chose to represent a universal human experience. Visitors recognize in the simple depiction the closeness between generations that often goes unnoticed in daily life.

The sculpture stands near Küüni Street in central Tartu and is easily accessible on foot from most parts of the city. The location sits along a popular route where many people pass by, giving them a chance to see and reflect on the work.

The artist modeled the sculpture after himself and his son Kristjan at around one and a half years old, making the work a personal statement. This biographical connection gives the piece an intimate quality that often moves viewers as it mirrors their own memories of family closeness.
