Paldiski Fortress, Military fortress in Paldiski, Estonia
Paldiski Fortress is a military installation along the western Estonian coast featuring a series of earthwork fortifications built on limestone cliffs. The site includes multiple sections with walls, bastions, and defensive structures spread across hilly terrain.
The fortress was built in the 18th century during Russian rule and served to control access to the Baltic Sea. It remained an active military site until Soviet forces withdrew in 1994.
The site reflects the layered history of powers that controlled this region, with buildings and structures showing the marks of different eras and military traditions. Walking through the grounds reveals how each period left its own architectural imprint on the landscape.
The site sits about 50 kilometers west of Tallinn and can be reached via roads leading through the coastal region. Wear sturdy footwear as the terrain is uneven and walking across the grounds requires good footing to safely explore the old structures.
The grounds display traces from two distinct military eras, with both tsarist Russian and Soviet-era structures visible side by side across the site. These physical remnants tell the story of how the location served different purposes across multiple decades.
