The Danse Macabre, Medieval painting in St Nicholas Church, Tallinn, Estonia
The Danse Macabre canvas measures 750 centimeters in width and 160 centimeters in height, featuring figures engaged in a procession with death.
Created between 1475 and 1499 by Bernt Notke, the painting first appeared in written records in 1603 through church warden Jost Dunte's maintenance notes.
The painting depicts death dancing with representatives from different social classes, accompanied by Low German verse dialogues between the characters.
Following restoration work from 1962 to 1964 in Moscow, visitors can view the painting in the St Anthony Chapel of St Nicholas Church.
This medieval artwork represents the only surviving Dance of Death painting on canvas from the 15th century in the entire world.
