El-Mursi Abul Abbas Mosque

This mosque in the Anfushi district features a large central dome surrounded by four smaller cupolas and an octagonal minaret decorated with detailed marble and copper columns. The structure spans thousands of square meters and showcases geometric patterns in marble floors along with colored glass windows and wooden ceilings throughout the interior.

A shrine existed at this location beginning in the 13th century as a spiritual center for the city. The current building was redesigned in 1996 by Italian architect Mario Rossi, blending architectural styles from Andalusia and the Ottoman period.

The mosque serves as an important place of worship for Alexandria's Muslim community, drawing visitors who come to pray and experience the spiritual atmosphere. The layout encourages people to move slowly through the space, creating moments of personal reflection and connection.

Visitors can enter during prayer times each day, with separate doorways for men and women provided throughout the building. Plan to remove your shoes before entering and wear modest clothing when visiting.

The building holds a significant library containing around 3000 manuscripts that cover Islamic theology, Arabic language studies, and classical literature. This collection draws scholars and readers who come to study these rare and important texts.
