Alexandria Aquarium, Natural history museum and aquarium in Al Anfushi, Egypt
The Alexandria Aquarium is a natural history museum and aquarium in Al Anfushi housing marine species from the Mediterranean and Red Sea. The collection also displays freshwater creatures from the Nile and Amazon rivers across multiple tanks and exhibition spaces.
The museum was founded in 1930 near the Citadel of Qaitbay as a research center focused on marine biology. Over time it grew into an institution dedicated to preserving and displaying Egypt's aquatic life.
The facility displays how water and its creatures matter to Egyptian communities, presenting both living animals and preserved specimens from local waters. Visitors can observe which species inhabit Egyptian waters and how they connect to daily life here.
The facility is open from 9 AM to 11 PM and features multiple areas to explore with both large and small tanks. A specialized library and research laboratories provide insight into the scientific work done on-site.
The museum displays a large whale skeleton that immediately catches visitors' attention upon entry. It also houses preserved specimens from the Mediterranean and Red Sea that cannot be found in other Egyptian institutions.
