Graeco-Roman Museum

Graeco-Roman Museum, Archaeological museum in Alexandria, Egypt.

The Graeco-Roman Museum is a collection of artworks from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods in Alexandria. It houses sculptures, coins, textiles, and mummy portraits that show the life and art of these eras.

The museum was founded in 1892 under Khedive Abbas Helmy II as a place for ancient Mediterranean artifacts. Over the following decades, the collection grew and developed into one of Egypt's major museum collections.

The museum displays works that reveal how Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians blended their artistic traditions together. You can see this blend in the statues, jewelry, and funeral objects scattered throughout the galleries.

The museum is located on Fouad Street and has multiple exhibition halls with objects from different time periods. It helps to allow time for exploring the various sections, as the collection is quite large.

The collection includes a marble head of Julius Caesar and Fayum portraits painted on mummy wrappings that show the face of the deceased. These portraits display remarkably detailed facial expressions that resemble realistic Roman portrait art.
