Cavafy Museum, Biographical museum in central Alexandria, Egypt

The Cavafy Museum is a biographical museum housed in the upper-floor apartment in central Alexandria where the poet spent the last years of his life. The rooms are kept much as they were when he lived there, with original furniture, handwritten manuscripts, letters, photographs, and personal belongings arranged throughout.

Cavafy moved into this apartment in the early 1900s and lived there until his death in 1933, making it the place where most of his mature work was written. Decades later the apartment was restored and opened as a museum, drawing visitors who follow his literary legacy.

The museum takes its name from the Greek poet Constantine Cavafy, who spent most of his life in Alexandria and wove the city into much of his writing. Walking through the rooms gives a clear sense of how closely his daily surroundings fed into the work he left behind.

The museum sits inside a residential building in central Alexandria and is easy to reach on foot from nearby landmarks. It is a small space, so a visit does not take long, but taking time to read the displayed letters and notes makes the experience more rewarding.

For years the poet lived directly above a brothel, in a building that also had a Greek Orthodox church on an upper floor. He reportedly described his situation with dry humor, saying he lived between sin and forgiveness, which gives the address an unexpected layer of meaning for those who visit today.
