Heptastadion

The Heptastadion was an ancient causeway stretching from the mainland to the former Pharos island and creating two natural harbors on either side. This engineering work connected two previously separate areas.

This structure was built in the 3rd century BC during the Ptolemaic period as a major engineering project. It proved essential to Alexandria's growth as a significant port city.

The name comes from Greek measurements and refers to seven stadia, an ancient unit of length. This naming reflects how Greek engineers described their technical achievements.

The remains of this ancient structure lie beneath modern development in Alexandria's central district today. Visitors should know the site is integrated into the urban landscape rather than existing as a separate location.
