Mallawi Museum, Archaeological museum in Mallawi, Egypt
The Mallawi Museum is an archaeological institution in Egypt displaying over 1,000 ancient Egyptian objects, including statues, pottery, and jewelry from surrounding excavation sites in Upper Egypt. The exhibited pieces come mostly from local areas and represent various art forms and artifacts spanning different time periods.
The museum was founded in 1963 as a regional repository for local archaeological discoveries. After significant damage in 2013, it underwent extensive restoration and reopened in 2016 with expanded collections.
The museum displays animal mummies and statues from local excavation sites like Tuna al-Gebel and Hermopolis, showing how ancient Egyptians honored their gods and sacred creatures. Visitors can observe how these practices reflected the beliefs and values of people in this region.
The museum is located in Mallawi in Upper Egypt and housed in modern, renovated spaces that offer good views of the objects. The exhibition is easy to navigate and can be explored comfortably in a few hours.
Following restoration, over 500 new artifacts joined the collection, many recovered or acquired in the years after the closure. These newly obtained objects show how active archaeological work continues in the region.
