Monastery of Santa María de la Sierra, Benedictine monastery ruins in Collado Hermoso, Spain.
Monastery of Santa María de la Sierra is a Benedictine abbey ruin in Collado Hermoso with a church containing three naves divided into five sections. The western facade features three archivolts, and the interior displays pointed arches characteristic of Romanesque construction.
The monastery was founded in 1126 by Bishop Pedro de Agén under Benedictine rule. In 1219 it joined the Cistercian order, marking a significant shift in its religious and administrative practices.
The nave capitals display carved animal and plant designs that reflect the artistic tastes of its medieval builders. These decorative details show how Romanesque craftsmen combined natural imagery with stylized forms throughout the structure.
Access to the ruins is limited to Wednesdays between 10:00 and 13:00, and advance reservations are required. It is recommended to book in advance to secure a place for your visit.
In 1925 the cloister, chapter house, and refectory were dismantled and shipped to the United States. These sections were reassembled to form St. Bernard de Clairvaux Church, leaving only parts of the original structure at this Spanish site.
