Moratalaz, Residential district in eastern Madrid, Spain
Moratalaz is a residential district in eastern Madrid with wide avenues and green spaces spread across several neighborhoods. The area is bordered by major transportation routes and connects different local communities within its boundaries.
The area grew from a small settlement in the 1960s into a large residential district through government housing programs. This development shaped the current structure and organization of the different neighborhoods.
The separate neighborhoods within the district, such as Pavones and Vinateros, each have their own local gathering spaces and strong community bonds. These areas function as distinct villages within the larger district.
Metro Line 9 with stations at Vinateros, Artilleros, and Pavones connects the district to central Madrid. Multiple bus routes supplement the transit system and provide flexible movement throughout the area.
In 2001, the world's largest paella dish was prepared and served here in front of about 100,000 people. This event secured a place in the Guinness World Records.
