Barruera

Barruera is a mountain village in Vall de Boí made up of stone houses sitting at about 1100 meters in the Pyrenees. The buildings show Romanesque and local building styles, with narrow streets and a church that marks the village center.

The village began as a medieval settlement and kept its original building style through the centuries. Its architecture was protected and is now recognized as a Cultural Asset of National Interest.

The San Feliu church stands at the heart of the village and shows the Romanesque style that defines this mountain community. The houses are built close together, a practical choice that helped residents support each other through the harsh mountain winters.

The village sits on various hiking routes in the region and allows access to outdoor activities year-round. Visitors should expect steep paths and be prepared for changeable mountain weather.

The village is an almost complete example of a medieval mountain community, showing how people lived and built in extreme elevations. This coherence of the old layout is exceptionally rare in the Catalan region.
