Monestir de Sant Miquel dels Reis, Renaissance monastery in Valencia, Spain
Monestir de Sant Miquel dels Reis is a Renaissance monastery in Valencia organized around two cloisters. Stone arcades and balustrades frame these courtyards, while a Latin cross church forms the heart of the complex.
The monastery was founded in 1546 by Ferdinand of Aragon and built on the grounds of an earlier religious community. Over centuries, it underwent changes and eventually became home to cultural and educational institutions through restoration work.
The monastery now houses the Valencian Library and the Academy of Valencian Language within its restored rooms. These institutions bring daily activity to the building and keep it connected to the region's intellectual life.
The monastery is open on weekdays and Saturdays with varying hours depending on the day. Visitors are advised to check current opening times before arriving and to ask staff about access to different areas of the building.
The church facade displays Renaissance elements resembling altars, flanked by two towers with Baroque Solomonic columns. These columns are adorned with sculptures of the three Magi, creating an unexpected blend of architectural styles.
