Batería de Castillitos, Military fort in Cabo Tiñoso, Cartagena, Spain
Batería de Castillitos is a fortified position built on a rocky ridge at around 250 meters above sea level. The site contains underground chambers, tunnels, and observation points that overlook the coastline and Mediterranean approaches.
The site was built between 1933 and 1936 as part of defensive preparations for Cartagena's harbor. It was equipped with modern British artillery pieces designed to monitor and protect the coast across considerable distances.
The fort blends medieval castle elements with 1930s military engineering in its physical design. Visitors can see how crenellated walls and stone towers serve both as symbolic and functional coastal defense.
Access is via a winding military road starting from Campillo de Adentro, which can be steep in places. Wear sturdy footwear and allow plenty of time to walk through the internal passages and chambers.
Two original British Vickers cannons from the 1930s still stand in their original positions on the ridge. These rare weapons represent one of Spain's few surviving coastal artillery installations that remain in their complete original state.
