Islas e Islotes del Mar Mediterráneo, Protected archipelago in Region of Murcia, Spain
The Mediterranean islands and rocky islets form an archipelago of 18 small islands and rock formations between Águilas and La Manga del Mar Menor. The protected area covers approximately 42 hectares with varied coastal habitats and rocky outcrops.
The area was used for military purposes for many years, which helped preserve the natural ecosystems and endemic species from development. Official protection arrived in 2019 as a recognized conservation area.
The islands serve as vital breeding grounds for seabirds such as storm petrels and gulls, which nest here in significant numbers. This natural bird sanctuary shapes the daily patterns and behavior of local wildlife today.
Access to the protected area is limited to protect natural habitats and wildlife. Visitors should contact information points beforehand to learn about access rules and what viewing opportunities may be available.
The area supports rare Ibero-African plant species such as Periploca angustifolia and Caralluma europaea that are otherwise hard to find. These botanical rarities thrive in four distinct habitat types recognized under European conservation directives.
